“Winning the award as a family acted as a catalyst for us to get to where we are today”

The Gay family took home the title of our Family Farming Business in 2016 and acted as a springboard to grow to the next level. Heading up the business are Celia and Hugh with their children Kirsty, 33, Naomi, 30, and twins Will, 27, and Josh, 27.

“Winning the Family Farming Business award really reigned home how much we had achieved and gave us so much confidence moving forward to expand our business.

“From starting as a redundant dairy farm we reared our stock and diversified into opening our own farm shop, butchery and café selling our own beef, pork, lamb and many lovely local products.

“As a fourth generation farming family we all pitched in to make the business the success it is today. Josh is now taking on the day-to-day running of our tenant farm, working alongside Hugh. The rest of the family also help out as much as they can, especially at busy times such as Christmas, Halloween and our Open Farm Day.

Growth

“Our Parlour Café Room (that was once the milking parlour for our cows) is now accompanied by our Park Room Café extension. This was headed up by our daughter, Kirsty and features a great deal of our own home reared meats and vegetables on the menus.

“William has just started his innovative Roots Allotments on our field that is closest to Bath, and we are also farming land for other local landowners, with Josh focusing on farming regeneratively.

“This shared vision of what our business could be and the confidence given to us by winning the Family Farming Award back in 2016 acted as a catalyst for us to get to where we are today.
