After answering the call for more domestic workers in farming during the Covid-19 pandemic, career changer Emma Houlton has risen through the ranks at a Lancashire-based vegetable grower, with plans being made to take on her own tenancy.
When contracts started to get cancelled at the production company she owns, Emma decided to look for an alternative somewhere else so she could keep her staff in the business. Having realised there was a shortage of farm workers, she found a database of farms seeking employees, which led her to Farringtons.
With no experience of working on a farm, she started on working on Farringtons’ Hesketh Bank site as an operative in field harvesting and in the greenhouse loading plants.
She has since been promoted to a management position within the 121-hectare (300-acre) business, assisting the family in running its Flintshire site and leading the harvesting team. Leading the 20-strong team of permanent and seasonal staff, Emma’s involvement has allowed the family to focus on other areas of the business, such as overseeing the correct propagation of plants and crops at other sites and improving waste and loss, which had previously been a problem.
Farming may have been a dramatic change from her previous role as a radio producer, but Emma has been able to utilise her business knowledge and help the business look into new areas, such as calf rearing and equestrian.
She has worked closely with the director to create a roadmap on where the business is heading post-Covid-19. One key change has been to streamline the harvesting process with a new box system, which has meant fewer staff are required in the field and orders are being produced faster.
She believes her biggest contribution has been opening up the workplace for other women to join having worked solely with a male workforce when she joined.
Responsible for staff training, Emma now works with younger girls who are actively encouraged to progress and upskill in key practical areas central to the business.
